I’ve been sort of running around like crazy today, as my friend and former editor, Juliet Ulman, sent me a photograph she took of her copy of Elle magazine’s September issue. It’s a photograph of the contributor’s page, where the photographer and film director Carter Smith is asked what he anticipates doing this fall, and he states that he hopes he’ll be directing the film adaptation of “Christopher Barzak’s book One for Sorrow“.
I about fell out of my chair. Mr. Smith indeed purchased an option to make my novel into a film last year, but you know, these sorts of things sometimes happen and most of the time they don’t. It still may not happen, but if he’s finished the screen adaptation of the novel, it probably means he’s still planning on it. Here’s hoping that he can make it happen. I would love to see how he translates the story to the screen.
Here’s the photo Juliet sent me. I’m still always surprised by the interest people have taken in this book. It’s very gratifying. 🙂

!!! One For Sorrow could make a wonderful movie, and a visually beautiful one with this director. I don’t know Smith’s work but imdb says he’s coming from fashion photography and did a series of “gritty, documentary-style portraits of teen life in the Midwest”. This sounds like it might be a great fit. I know these things are unreliable until they’re actually happening, but ooh I want it to happen! Here’s hoping.
I think so, too, Karen, re: could be visually beautiful, especially with this director. I’ve looked up a lot of his photography and love it, and his Sundance Short Film Award winning film Bugcrush, too. Fingers crossed!

If this happens I will literally cry. This is one of my favorite novels! My grandmother works as an art teacher for Youngstown/Poland area and I got to have my book signed. This book definitely gave me a few different perspectives. I am currently studying it for my AP literature class and I recommend this book to all of my friends. I live in Germany and even the Germans love reading the book!
